A destination undiscovered by the tourist hordes; a place graced by natural beauty, but torn by a horrible war; people who try to heal their wounds and maintain their traditions; Bosnia and Herzegovina is the ideal place for those who prefer an alternative vacation, close to nature and uncovering new, almost primitive, experiences. The north and central part used to be named “Bosnia”, from the old, Indo-European word “bosana”, which means “water”. The southern part, Herzegovina, which hosts the only coast of the country (on the Adriatic Sea), was named by the Ottoman Turks who conquered the country after Herceg (Duke) Stjepan. The capital city of this heart-shaped, almost landlocked country has always been a melting pot of religions and civilizations, and this is why it was often called “Jerusalem of Europe” or “Jerusalem of the Balkans” - it’s one of the few big cities throughout Europe that own a mosque, a synagogue and churches within a small distance.
